This is my first blog post - anywhere - ever!

I want to tell you about my big rebellion against religion. I was not raised in a very religious home. My immigrant parents are lapsed Catholics and had lapsed long before I came along so no baptism for me!

I went to kindergarten at a catholic school but started grade one at the public school because I begged and pleaded to go where "all my friends" were. It was also Much closer to my house.

Around age 9 or 10 one of my friends asked me to come to church with her because it was 'fun.'

I asked permission and my mom said OK. so that sunday I went to "Sunday school" with my new friend.

I remember thinking it was really stupid and a big waste of time. We stayed for part of the sermon, then there was a puppet show and then the kids were sent 'downstairs.' I wondered what it was we weren't old enough to hear. Downstairs we made pumpkins out of home-made salty clay because it was almost Halloween. I wondered what this had to do with "God."

I never went again. However that same United church was the site of my big rebellion when I was in highschool. Why would someone who was never forced to believe anything need to rebel? Well ....

when I was about 15 we recieved a 'newspaper' in the mail - likely hand-delivered by a volunteer.

I found it and verbally expressed my surprise to my parents who thought I should just "throw it out."

I didn't - I was too curious. The thing was only about 4 pages and the size of a small info-tainment type paper.

The 'article' that led to my rebellion was a description of one woman finding god because Jesus "spoke to her."

Her tale was appalling - basically a vision of Jesus came to her and demanded she submit to him - repeating the phrase "worship me" again and again! I crossed out "worship" and wrote in 'fuck' and guess what - it was a rape scene - with virtually No Other changes! I freaked out! I ranted to Mom and Dad - Dad found this very entertaining - Mom not so much. Anyhow on the front page of this paper I wrote a message in large black marker telling them to "Never Darken My Door" with such propaganda ever again, and then I walked the 6 blocks to the church and tacked it to the door!

I felt very proud of myself.

What is really fun is that at this point in my life I had no knowledge of Martin Luther nailing his edicts to the church door - it just seemed like the right thing to do!

Thanks for reading - would love to hear about similar rebellions!

Jim McCann, I got into big trouble when I asked my sunday school teacher what God was. I didn't accept the stock answer that God is God, and I was punished for it when we got home.

Ally, I wish sometimes that I was a 2nd generation non-believer like you. Religion screwed my life up royally. The Maritn Luther thing was ironic, no doubt.

That's hilarious Ally! I live 2 doors down from a church and I occasionally get there propoganda in my mailbox. It pisses me off, but until now I didn't really know what to do about it... Now I do! Thanks!! :)

What you did, in my opinion, was not much of a rebellion;rather, you simply reacted to an obnoxious overture from a bunch of (perhaps) well-meaning but rude and ignorant people with your honest, more rational objection to their presumptious attempts to "save you" when you clearly were not lost. That you unwittingly channeled Martin Luther---now THERE was an irrational if influential fly in the ointment of western civilization!---is one of those wonderful little coincidences that life sometimes gives us. But next time they harass you with crap like that, rather than posting theses, try slinging feces.[caveat: but please do not try to employ any nails with this variation on a theme] Keep on thinking.

What fun to learn that Jesus was a rapist long before he infected you with the sexually transmitted disease called Christianity. You never know, your posting on the church door may have had a big effect on the person who found it! Wish you still had a copy, we could start posting it on all church doors to warn them! keep on blogging!
