The Problem with the Coexist Bumper Sticker

You may have seen them on cars or t-shirts, the coexist message has become fairly popular with liberal Christians and other liberal religious people. On the surface, it sounds like a pretty cool movement, but I do have a few issues with it.

I also have a problem with this bumper sticker. It encourages people to be tolerant and/or respectful of religious organizations in a way that is detrimental to those who would stand for science.

The only really positive argument I have heard from an atheist on this subject was at a parenting seminar that I went to in April. Dale Mcgowan was giving a presentation on parenting, and mentioned that family members who openly displayed this sort of message were often more approachable when wishing to discuss atheist topics and/or when outing oneself as an atheist to the family.

I do not know how true this is as I have never attempted to discuss my godlessness with a family member based on whether or not she or he had a COEXIST bumper sticker, but I suppose it could be helpful.

The biggest problem with it is that the Islamic jihadits are not interested in coexisting with ANYBODY. Everybody except them are infidels and at some point much be exterminated.
