One of the news items these days is that a mosque will be built near Ground Zero, the site of the 9/11 attack in New York. I find it offensive that any religion would want a place of workshop at this location. However, I see no reason to exclude Muslim places of worship any more than others. The right wing of the Republican Party seems to have decided to make this mosque a political issue, but I don’t like the Christian Right any more than I like the Muslim Right. Moderates of all religions are fine with me as long as they respect the rights of atheists and the secular nature of the Western world.

There WERE christians in Iraq, until the Shiites intimidated them into leaving. I doubt they had any churches or buildings to congregate in, but the persecution of christians and ba'hais by muslims has been in the news repeatedly.

The nitwit right would have their knickers in a twist if they were building the mosque in Newark. I would rather not see a church, mosque or temple built anywhere but that fantasy ain't going to happen. They own the land and the building - there are no zoning or building restrictions so it's their right to construct what they like. To deny them that right doesn't compromise thier values it compromises ours.

True it is two blocks away, seems this should be a matter for the people of the city of New York to decide.
