David Foster Wallace, the novelist, essayist and humorist best known for his 1996 novel "Infinite Jest," was found dead Friday night at his home in Claremont, according to the Claremont Police Department. He was 46.

Jackie Morales, a records clerk at the department, said Wallace's wife called police at 9:30 p.m. Friday saying she had returned home to find that her husband had hanged himself

He taught creative writing at Pomona College in Cali. Imagine being his student. The semester's just started, you turned down numerous other good writing programs to get into Pomona, because you had the chance to learn from this 20th century master, DFW himself. And this is what you wake up to this morning. Once they get over their initial shock and grief, I imagine the next thought is 'wtf, guy? The semester's just begun...couldn't you have just taken some Prozac and waited 'til Christmas, like everyone else?'

It is a bummer though. *sigh* What is it with writers?

That's surprising. I always figured the rumors had substance and I guess I just assumed that anyone who reads his work or is even a little interested in him as an artist assumes the same. In light of this, you'd think they'd mention it, though.

Sad. I found it interesting that neither the LA Times obit nor the Wikipedia page mention rumors of his manic depression.
