"We will act as Americans, not partisans"

McCain orders GOP convention curtailed because of Gustav; Bush, Che...

ST. PAUL, Mn. - John McCain tore up the script for his Republican National Convention on Sunday, casting himself as above politics as Hurricane Gustav churned toward New Orleans. "We will act as Americans, not partisans", he declared.

There is still going to be a rather large anti-[insert (proper)noun] contingent on site, potential protesters are still being rounded up by the police and the hundreds of national (and international) news agencies will be on hand but covering basically nothing. I imagine foot traffic down at the Mall of America will be insane...perhaps I'll go hunting for Wolf Blitzer. I wonder which food court he'd hang out at...

I never thought I'd say this but I actually agree with McCain's decision. The goings on at the convention will not be political and many delegates have been flown back to their home states.

McCain campaign manager Davis told reporters inside the convention hall that the opening program on Monday would be "business only and will refrain from political rhetoric."

To help those in need, he said, "We are working with the delegations, financial people, finance committees, many other concerned individuals to do what we can to raise money for various charities that operate in the Gulf Coast region."

I won't be going on Monday morning. I see no reason to gather and descend upon the Xcel Center when the goings on inside are philanthropic. Doing so would not only send the wrong message but be completely counter-active to the actual cause. It puts a pretty big hole in the plans for my podcast over the next two weeks but I'll manage something.

I will go later in the week if the convention is continued as previously planned but for now I'm taking McCain's comment to heart.

looks like the RNC is full go since Gustav didn't hit with quite the wallop they were expecting. I'm working out logistics to get down there Wednesday morning/afternoon.

If tomorrow goes anything like today there won't be much activity until later in the evening, trying to get people on the phone to see what's what.

I fought with that same idea but with the uncertainty of the whole situation I would have felt like a jerk. With the number of private jets coming back into the area the local buzz is that they'll be getting the convention back on track before the week is out. Should that happen I'm damn sure going. I will, however, be making a post later today detailing a lot of the news that the major networks chose to ignore and give some good links for people to follow that want the word on the street from reputable sources.

I admit, I was kind of hoping you'd still go, to do nothing else but stand by, witness, and report back the goings-on. ;) I feel like we need as many trustworthy eyes on the ground as possible.

Thanks Skylar!

You wouldn't believe the amount of flack I'm getting from a few people locally. They see it as a prime media opportunity :/

I support your decision completely. Good call.
