WE all tend  to make fun of the bible because  of God  and his many  miracles....However  the expression  `throwing the baby  out with the bathwater'  applies  here'......The bible should be renamed  the Book of Ancient history......My point is  if you take out  all references  to God  and his many  miracles, all that is left  are  stories  of real people  who  actually  shaped  our lives in many ways......The so called bible  gets  the dates  wrong, but  archaeological  digs  can  verify  the dates for us..the people  mentioned were  real  and need their stories  told.....The first  thing I would  discard is  God creating  the universe  in 6 days and resting  on day 7....Adam and Eve  and the Garden of Eden  has to go.....There may have  been a Noah   but the Ark  is  way over the top and the part with  2 of each animal that was living  at the  time  is  total  nonsense......The miracles  of Moses were most likely natural  events  over many years.....The burning bush, has to go, God writing   the 10 commandments, has to go, although  I am sure  Moses wrote them along  with many  books  of the Torah......The Virgin birth was really  Mary  cheating on Joseph  and  making  up a story...After all  adultery  was frowned  upon  then even more than today......The 3 wise men     following   the bright star all the way  to the birth of Jesus is  a total myth.....Jesus  walking on water  was merely  walking  on a plateau in the water which drops  off....The resurrection  was merely  a grave robber stealing his body, which was common  then....I could go on but  you know  what I mean....We need an Atheist to rewrite the bible and make it  a history  book instead, maybe then people  will believe in it...

The Jesus Seminar that you linked to, actually works on reconstructing the historical Jesus in a naturalistic way.   They try to figure out which sayings of Jesus really came from him, using a voting system, and they do conceive of him as a faith healer and "itinerant Hellenistic Jewish sage".

What evidence do mythicists have against that picture?  There's nothing unreasonable about it, and no evidence that should be there if Jesus existed, that isn't (which is not true of the Exodus).

Historians think the Jesus nativity story is made up, to fulfill prophecy.  I don't know if the story from Jesus' childhood is made up.  It does sound like something invented.

But most of what the mythicists talk about, relates to the supernatural elements of the Jesus story, which aren't considered historical.

Your Christ myth Wikipedia link says

there remains a nearly universal consensus agreement among that Jesus lived, but they differ about the accuracy of the accounts of his life. The two main events agreed upon by biblical scholars are that Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist and was crucified by the order of the Roman Prefect Pontius Pilate.

Wikipedia on the historical Jesus:

Although a very small number of modern scholars argue that Jesus never existed, that view is a distinct minority and virtually all scholars consider theories that Jesus' existence was a Christian invention as implausible.

Richard Carrier does have a PhD in ancient history although he's only 5 years out of grad school.  He's a public atheist intellectual - he isn't an academic historian so far as I know, he writes books and gives talks.  I'm skeptical of the quality of his thought, and that's not just because he's a mythicist.

@kh     Actually   I am quite  new  to Atheism, and as you can tell, my feelings  about religion continue  to disintegrate.    I must  say that the members  here  have  been quite  helpful in supplying  me with information  I need to evolve from a so so  believer  to a true  Non believer.....Just shows how knowledge equals  clarity...

Sorry hit the wrong button. Question for Freethinker was how long you've been an atheist? We all find our own paths. After almost thirty years of being atheist it seems I've studied so much l don't believe a word of it any longer.

I've read a lot about this non existent Jesus. I tend agree that the facts don't support him. It was happening at the time pagans were falling out of favor. Directly because of christians. They were, and are, a brutal lot. Only in a more subtle way now.
Freethinker, have you been an atheist long? You seem to stil lot of the bibl

The debate on the historicity of Jesus has really gained traction in recent years.  As more evidence is unearthed, some very prominent and knowledgeable biblical scholars have now come to the conclusion that the actual person Jesus did not exist.   It's a very unpopular stance to take, but that is where the evidence seems to point.

It's rather easy to see how the bible commanded and retained so much influence over the past millennium.  Modern science is roughly only 400 years old.  Before that, the bible was used as a history book, a natural science book, and a spiritually religious book.  There really was no other wide-spread alternative to explain the past and the surrounding world, especially within societies that were mostly illiterate,

the Bible had some truth

The Bible does have some historical truth.  The Hyksos (probably Canaanite) invasion of Egypt may be the historical truth behind the Exodus.

I'm still reading The Bible Unearthed to find out about the rest of the Old Testament.

There almost certainly was a historical Jesus, but historians are sure only of his baptism and his crucifixion.

k.h......Isn't it sad how people,  so long ago, manipulated people  with false  Bible stories that  were kept  alive  by Theists  for  over two millennium..Because  of this manipulation, followers went to war  over  them....Religion was and still is  a menace.......Thank gawd  for Rational  thinking...

It's stories. Made up by men. To gain power. Watch some nat - geo Stories From the Bible. The ones about the gospels that were trashed are especially interesting. Over 300 if I remember correctly. You know women wrote some of the unpublished ones.

@Future.......I guess I was wrong after all.....The proof is just  too convincing....I have always  been known  to be stubborn and maybe  I was  clinging  on for dear life  that the Bible had some truth.   But you are right   the stories  and  the actors in them just don't add up.....I am a true non-believer  now.....
