Understanding the difference between apples and oranges is difficult when your tastebuds are partial to watermelon and red soda water especially when trying to spin a story as tragic, but predictable as the Arizona massacre that severely wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and killed six others.
It was about 12:30 p.m. when I walked into the lunchroom and as usual the television was tuned to FOX News, which for the people I work with is par for the NRA, Right Wing, ultra-religious folk in Dallas, TX. I stopped to look because a black man--Juan Williams-- was on the screen and talking about the Arizona massacre making suggestions as to how President Obama should address the nation regarding the tragedy. Every now and then Juan forgets his position as the resident house-nigger at FOX and says something the master does not endorse and I thought this might be one of those occasions, but I knew better before I sat down.
Sure enough, there was Uncle Juan did not disappoint saying that now was the time for mending fences in the fashion of "Ronald Reagan" when the "Gipper" addressed the nation following the Challenger space shuttle disaster. Williams went on to say that the president should speak to the nation in much the same way Reagan specifically addressed school children about the death of Christa McAuliffe, the school teacher aboard the shuttle.
Two things come to mind immediately: First, we are not school children; second, and more importantly, this was not a tragic accident, but a planned action by a deranged man possibly influenced by the hate and violent rhetoric generated by FOX News and its personalities Glen Beck, Sarah Palin, Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity. No, Uncle Juan, you can't win one for the "Gipper" and to make such a suggestion is disingenuous as it is transparent and self-serving.
Perhaps, FOX thought having a neutered Negro deliver the suggestions would take the well deserved spotlight away from their "fair and unbiased" news, but, excuse the expression, they will have to take the bullet for this one. Republicans have already started the spin doctoring, but this one will not be as easy as running the ignorance of the Tea Party to the regular ignorati they depend on to buy the usual line of bull. The nation is appalled as is the world.
Sadly, the shining light on the hill was extinguished years ago and is slowly being replaced with corporate inspired fascism and the majority of Americans are too stupid to realize it, including you, Uncle Juan. Perhaps, this judgement is too harsh, but even Judas got paid.
