Rhonda, touché! The truth is sometimes painful. I heard that there was a test given on religious matters to atheists and believers and the atheists had better scores. Maybe this lady was going on blind faith.

A patient of mine found out that I was an atheist. She started telling me how wrong I was for not believing in god. She started telling me how god was so wonderful and I needed to let him in my heart and in my mind. When I asked her if she liked racists, bigots and if she believed slavery was acceptable. She of course replied with an emphatic no! I asked her if god believed in racism, bigotry, slavery or mistreatment of women. She said she was a strong black woman, and would not put up with anyone who treated her poorly. Again, she answered no, stating god was pure, kind and perfect. This woman I write about speaks weekly in her church, and is a devout christian. I asked her if I could use her bible for a couple of minutes. She smiled thinking she had just converted me. I flipped the pages and read to her from corinthians where it clearly states it is shameful for women to speak in church. I turned to leviticus and read the slavery rules to her, and refreshed her memory of how Lot treated his dughters, and read to her in leviticus about the how her tattoo was a direct violation in her god's eyes.

She listened and was at a loss for words. In fact she started crying. I then told her, I do not believe in bigotry, racism, slavery or misogyny, but her god does. I asked her to re evaluate her views on my atheism. A couple of hours later, she called me over; she said she has read the bible every day, and never saw those things in it. She apologized to me. She said she thought all atheist were filled with hate. She thought it humorous that an atheist was better informed about the bible than a life long christian.

My sister is an atheist and mean. Sadly, the two can go together.

I too stumble over words like bless and pray; how about the "Oh God" comment that always seems to pop up? I try not to blame myself for using these habitual word, comments or thoughts because our world is consistently represented to us in this way. Can the word Bless also mean good health? I think it could so that is why I use it at times. Sometimes you just have to speak to the public in their own language. Grace, is your sister really mean? Have you ever wondered what it would be like if everyone was atheist? To me, that thought baffles me. I would not even know where to start to paint that imaginary picture.

I talked to my dad's wife. She said my sister is behaving so meanly because she doesn't believe in an afterlife. I said it was because my sister is a bitch.
