Lately, I've been walking a track around a large lake. Part of the track runs parallel to a busy street and then across that street is a public middle school. I noticed one Sunday morning while walking, huge, tall billowing flags for a Church. After a few more laps the signs were gone.

It really bothered me, that on this public school lot, were signs for a church service that is held there every Sunday. When I think separation of church and state, I imagine church being far removed from public schools. But this isn't the case, here. Church is IN the school. And I thought, this can't be legal. And after some quick research, mainly on the Freedom From Religion Foundation website, I found that it IS completely legal, so long as they are renting the property properly.

And while this leaves me so uneasy and upset, there is nothing I can do about it. And that troubles me.

Just thought I'd share.

I don't have any problem with a school renting space to local groups as long as they are indiscriminate about it. In other words, if they rent to a church group today and they rent space to an atheist group tomorrow then I'm fine with it.

The question is would they rent to an atheist group?
