Do you remember the old tv series "Dinosaurs" with Earl, Robbie, Fran, Charlene, and Baby. Remember "gotta love me, I'm the baby", "AGAIN!", "Not the mama!"? I have all 4 seasons on dvd and there is a wonderful episode called "The Greatest Story Ever Sold" which talks about abandoning science to blinding follow a religion. I highly recommend watching it.

Here is the excerpt from wikipedia on the episode.

In the final season, "The Greatest Story Ever Sold" (a take off of The Greatest Story Ever Told) even references religion when the Sinclair family becomes eager to learn the meaning of their existence. The Elders dictate a new system of beliefs, and the entire cast (with the exception of Robbie) abandons science to blindly following the newly popular "Potato-ism." The religion arbitrarily brings about a set of strange and pointless rules that they decree all dinosaurs must adhere to, possibly a parody of the Ten Commandments. Robbie and a reluctant Earl refuse to follow the rules leading to their punishment of being burned at the stake. Just as they are about to be executed, the fire mysteriously goes out. It is considered a sign, and the two are allowed to go free. The episode ends with them speculating as to whether there really is a god who created and watches over them.

It's amazing, but I remember it too. My kids watched it, which means I watched it too. The boys were in that dinosaur phase that kids go through and they loved that show. Now that you've stirred our memories, how are we gonna live until you show them? We could all come to your place and watch, what do you think?

That episode was the farmer that plant the seed of doubt.

Weird, I watched that show growing up and I had completely forgotten about it. Now that I think back to it, that episode did get me thinking a little. That was around the time I started getting into George Carlin as well so it didn't take long for me to see reason.
