Someone posted a link to an Esquire article by Shane Claiborne on my facebook page. I will link it here. My response was, "I think what Shane Claiborne doesn't realize is that atheists don't believe in God because they hate Christians, they don't believe in God because it coincides with Evolution. Seeing how hypocritical Christians are just makes it easier for atheists to see why a God wouldn't exist to them. The fact that most Christians are against gay marriage, or gays altogether, is another matter that aids the atheist agenda, but overall the main reason an atheist is an atheist is because of their ideals, not because some Christians have pissed them off."

I would like to go more into detail here.

Mr. Claiborne pretty much assumes that atheists are atheists because they hate Christians. This is so wrong on so many levels.

In his article he talks about his form of evangelism, where he only preaches love and how God and Jesus are love. He never mentions the atrocities that God was involved in, and only mentions Bible verses that talk about God's love. Claiborne starts out his letter with, "To all my nonbelieving, sort-of-believing, and used-to-be-believing friends: I feel like I should begin with a confession. I am sorry that so often the biggest obstacle to God has been Christians. Christians who have had so much to say with our mouths and so little to show with our lives. I am sorry that so often we have forgotten the Christ of our Christianity."

Claiborne is assuming we have become atheists because Christians, or Christianity as a whole, has pissed us off. I became an atheist because I realized, after reading the Bible, that the Bible was a load of crap. My mother was a nun before she left the convent in order to have children. She introduced me to the loving God that Mr. Claiborne discusses in his article, but by reading the Bible for myself, by myself, I realized that interpretation is up to the reader, and I decided it was created by man with no help from some higher being. Most atheists did not become atheists because we hated, or currently hate, Christians, we became atheists because the teachings of the Bible went against our own morals. When Christians often say that God is love, I wonder if they ever read the parts where God tells the victors of war to kill the children, and take the women as your prize. How is this love? You can't just take one part of a Bible where it speaks of love and totally leave out the part that shows Christian immorality. Yes, some atheists did become atheist because they were Christians in the past and they saw the hypocrisy, but that did not make them atheist. When Christians no longer agree with each other they create new sects. Why do you think there are hundreds, if not thousands, of different sects, or churches? Christians can't make their minds up about their interpretation of the Bible. Who is right? Christians do not turn atheist because they hate God or other Christians, they turn atheist because they realize they have been duped. This goes way beyond the hatred of Christians.

Mr. Claiborne pretty much sums up my view of Christians, people who are afraid of death, so they hold on to a belief that is based on "faith" and not "evidence."
