Evangelists - all noise but little knowledge?

About one year ago I shared an interesting bus trip with a self-declared Christian evangelist, only one hour but very enlightening, a true epiphany (sorry!).

Previously a close friend claimed my criticisms of Christianity were ill-founded through lack of knowledge. I was wrongly seeing all believers as hard-code fundamentalists. So I'd make a real effort to study religion, Christianity, and the Christian bible. I grew up in a secular family.

So back to the bus trip. Here was a real chance to check out my knowledge with a true believer. I'd been studying the gospel of Mark so I thought let's talk about Mark. Now, quick bio on my bus neighbour. He was part of HillSong in Sydney, Australia's most well-known mega-church. He help set up the same in London. And now he was back in Melbourne itching to do the same thing. He was a true-blue, hard-core, take-no-prisoners Christian - friendly though.

Back to the gospel of Mark. So what did Jesus mean to Mark? How did Mark portray Jesus? How do you feel about Mark's ending? A blank stares! He had favourite passages that he could quote but nothing much more. It didn't take me long to realise this guy was heavy on the proclamations and light on the theology. I ended up explaining some of the text to him! Talk about helping the enemy.

[chuckle] It seems the more atheists I meet, the more I'm convinced that WE have read more of the bible than THEY have!

I can also quote from the Bhagavad Gita, if you want ... but that's more a product of my time with the Transcendental Meditation organization than anything else!
