You can now read a response article by PZ Myers in the Times and a number of people's comments made on his response. No space was given for responses to the original, for some funny reason. He outreasons her, it goes without saying, but admits that atheists are boring, which I'm afraid might be playing into her hands.

exactly, and that is what someone wrote to the LA times, which is far more effective than writing her. they said that if you wrote any other minority in the blank for "Atheist," there's no way in hell they'd print it.

Ugh. Charlotte Allen was that same lady who said women were all stupid a while ago. I'm not surprised.

What a load of shit this is. She's making fun of atheists for complaining about REAL discrimination and antagonism that they face. How much do you want to be she wouldn't say this, or wouldn't get away with saying it, about any other minority group?

maybe its because I live somewhere where we don't allow lunatics to stand on street corners shouting whatever comes into their heads, then go up to them and say' Do you have a fully automatic assalt rifle?' and they say 'No' and then say 'OK well here... take mine'

Yeah well... I would have to agree a lot of atheists are boring and obsesed with minutiae, and seem to have forgotten that life is for living not scoring points off people who are a bit dim.
Not that that applies to anyone on this forum of course ;-)

I read this piece (of . . .) this morning and had the same reaction as Scott. Just a bunch of ad hominem attacks, and then she criticizes the atheists for lack of arguments! I noticed that her main criticism seemed to be that atheists are (oh, no!) boring. Perhaps this is an attempt to rein in wayward youth. My own refutation would invite the young to check out atheists and apologists on electronic media and think for themselves (and see who they think is really boring).

That article was an impressive string of ad hominem attacks. I wouldn't worry so much about writing the author of that article directly, but if I had more time and the inclination I might refute the article and send it in to the editorial board of the Times.
