We're witnessing the politics of fear — AGAIN
There is something marvelously predictable about human behavior when under duress or living with general anxiety. If day in and day out you're worried about your job or your safety, if every time you open the door a new BIG problem is there to greet you, if you can't keep up with the onslaught of drama, if you don't even understand a good bit of what is being said to you, ordinary people become paralyzed and barely able to make decisions.
This isn't a new tactic but with politicians now taking to social media like middle school kids, slinging mud and dire predictions, the atmosphere created is even less likely to be one of well being, hope or trust. They manage, instead, to ramp up FEAR. FEAR. FEAR. It permeates our environment. We're not GREAT. We're TERRIFIED. We may even be medicated or self-medicated in order to calm ourselves. When I spit on my finger and hold it in the air to determine the direction of the wind, the spit sizzles with fear.
Haven't you noticed?
Each day, a different group of people is threatened. You can barely keep up with it. Anyone on HIP 2.0, the expanded health care plan for low income people in the state of Indiana, has been made to tremble in fear over and over again since November 2016. Those who were impacted by the DACA decision became victims of the same unmerciful tactics. Old people are worried about losing medicare. This week, it's sport's teams that are being held hostage by some very invasive government intimidation. And, when all else fails, we can get our asses kicked into submission by the incessant game playing with North Korea that seems to promise imminent war — OMG — or at least someone wants us to think so. Run for cover!
Or better yet, take up thy sword and join us in the next war for profit. C'mon mom's and dad's of America, give us your sons and daughters.
Fear works! Every time! Politicians know it. Religious clergy know it. The good, old pimp knows it. Anyone who wants to control you knows it. Fear is one of the most effective ways available to coerce people into behaving the way you want them to. Wow! Everybody is scared shitless. Now ain't that something special. It's paralyzing and divisive, corrosive and dishonest, but it gets the job done.
This is an ugly time to be an American. However, when I need a reality check, I watch documentaries like 13th which follows the path the US has taken from slavery to prisons for profit or Ken Burns new series about Vietnam, and I'm quickly reminded that our society has always harbored a dark past as well as a strong sense of entitlement to exploit the little guy. It's just become a bit more blatant once again, because when you forget to remind the preachers, pimps and politicians that you're in charge of your own life, they'll eventually try to control you — once more — and usually by scaring you to death.
So just remember this! In the words of George Carlin ....
They don't care about you. They don't CARE about YOU.
