Good day all, let me start by saying this is my first social networking site and first blog post of all time! I could only fight against the times for so long.

A little about myself: I've been an atheist since I was very young. I can't recall any one event that drove me to freeing myself from the bonds of the christian faith, but rather a long progression of little things that made me question and wonder. My family knows and has come to accept it over time, though I find myself in a fairly tight spot as a member of the military. At least once or twice a week someone blames something on atheists or "godless heathens" of some kind and I find that I have to bite my tongue to keep the peace and keep from being persecuted for my lack of beliefs. It's rough when a chaplain works in the same building as I do and while I've become very skillful at avoiding him and conversations regarding religion, it's difficult to have no sense of community and not only feel like an outcast but know that in this place, I am.

I've been interested in skepticism and critical thinking for a very long time and look forward to meeting some of you.

Thanks all for the comments, it's great to have a community like this with like-minded individuals.

Brendan, you'd be surprised, this military is like civilian life in a lot of ways, most of my problems are caused by idiocy in positions of authority first, religion a distant second. The difference between the military and civilian life is that as a civilian, people who are unable to do their job are fired.

Kristy Vensson, I've already joined and am glad I have :)

robin, being in the minority is a state of mind. Just know that in this, your position is one that has been thought out and reasoned. At the end of the day, you've taken the time to make the best decision you could given the preponderance of the evidence.

Welcome, NoImaginaryFriends. I find myself biting my tongue all the time. It is a new feeling to me to be in the minority.

Glad to respond to your post.
As an X Airforce Member It was the same for me to view other people's faith based creeds from closer than I cared to see it.

I think that's where I heard the saying "military life won't give you everything you want, but by the time you're through it will have been made abundantly clear what you don't want, as you have received portions from that menu EVERY DAY.

I think you'll be wizer for having had the experience. You will know what you want and can head straight there (by the time of your seperation).

Welcome to Atheist Nexus! Are you aware that AN has a group called Fox Hole Atheists with 79 members? I'm sure you'll find lots to chat about and a great deal of support there.

Great to have you join us!

Welcome to A/N and the blogosphere. The problem of religious bullying of non-Christians in the military has been widely discussed online. I'm sure you'll find lots of support and information here. The A/N group, Foxhole Atheists would be a good place to start.
