Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church, which is led by Fred Phelps, plan to picket Comic-Con in San Diego.

The “Reverend” Phelps states his grievances against these hell bound idolaters,

“…. If these people would spend even some of the energy that they spend on these comic books, reading the Bible, well no high hopes here. They have turned comic book characters into idols, and worship them they do! Isaiah 2:8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: 9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not. It is time to put away the silly vanities and turn to God like you mean it. The destruction of this nation is imminent – so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry.”
I really don't know how the Comic-Con participants will respond to Phelps and his stalwart band but I would to love to be there to see it.

If I didn't know better, I'd think WBC was some kind of performance art parody. I mean NOBODY could be so friggin lacking in insight!

Comic books, and the fantasy/sci-fi genre in general, compete with their Big Book of Bronze Age Fairy Tales. If you don't think science fiction can compete with religion, just look at Scientology. That's not even good sci-fi!

I remember an interview with Shirley Phelps in which they somehow got her talking about things other than god hating everyone (dont' know how they managed that!) What movies did she like? She said Batman was good--the one with Heath Ledger, the same guy who was in Brokeback Mountain. Also, she used to rock out to Elton John.

I wouldn't be surprised if photos end up on the WWW.

I've seen Pastafarians spoof the Phelps clan to riotous effect, I'm sure the Comic Con crowd can carry on that proud tradition.

Well, Batman deserves more worshipping than God. He's far superior in terms of character development and personality, and he has a nifty utility belt.
