What is so annoying about being gullible is the shock I get when theists say something that is so silly, I simply do not believe them.

One friend told me he didn't believe in science, specifically that the universe is 14+ billions of years old because the scientists who make/use that equipment... lie.  How can they measure it?  How do you measure radioactive decay in dinosaur fossils?  You can't... they lie.  I thought he was playing a joke on me!  When I figured out he wasn't kidding, I was taken aback!  How, in this day and age can someone think this way?  I don't care if it conflicts with your beliefs, how do you deny such well established facts?

This kind of denial is what gets me above everything else.

I have these sorts of conversations with my family all the time. I think the thing that really makes me angry is when they claim that the only proof they need to back up the idea that the world is 6,000 years old and that evolution is a scam is their bible. Because, you know, a book written by men who had no grasp on astronomy or biology and had no access to the kind of advanced technology that we have today is way more accurate than solid evidence and theories created after years of study and testing. Obviously.

"Buybull"  ha!  never saw that before!
Thanks for all your support!  I tried to reason the whole light & time & distance and ended up laughing at him.  I know that's not going to win anyone over but at least I had fun!  Funny thing is, he's still a close acquaintance.

More silliness to come!

They do not believe in science because their Buybull was determined by Bishop Usher to only go back 6000 years. The Fundies even accepted this and everybody knew that the Buybull contains ALL of the history of mankind from beginning to end. Some idiots even today claim that everything we have ever known is predicted in the Buybull. This automaticly means that they believe in talking snakes and gawd sending she bears to kill children.

To believe in science would negate all of the above and expose you as being stupid, so it follows that maybe you cannot believe in the airplane, automobile, television, labor saving devices, computers, etc. The Amish live this way, but mentally all of the religious border upon it simply because you cannot have it both ways!

For the ancient book to be right, then science has to be wrong. They go through this world totally blind, and yet they have two eyes!

That kind of talk from believers tells us mountains about their low level of  intelligence. Even some schoolteachers don't help much either. Robert, if you could reason with believers there would be no believers.

It is amazing how many don't understand that science is all about evidence.

Those kind of comments annoy me too.

May I suggest a reading of the book "The Believing Brain" by founding publisher of Skeptic Magazine Michael Shermer ? Very informative book on why people believe such crazy things.

So ... they're ALL lying?  The American scientists, the English researchers, the Russians and the Chinese experts, never mind those from India, South Korea, Brazil and Germany ... ALL of them are LYING.  This is the kind of crap I would expect from a lightweight conspiracy theorist who doesn't know his ass from his elbow.

Someone had better inform this dweeb that science knows no nationalities.  Science is science ... and it WORKS.

If someone gives that argument I'd counter by saying that any scientist who was able to prove that the universe was really only a few thousand years old would be instantly world famous and have all the funding he wanted for life because it would upend over a century established science.

That being the case if they thought it was remotely possible they'd be trying their best to prove it.
