I just don't buy the spirituality thing!

I just can't get the grips into the spiritual movement! Maybe its too abstract for me! I mean everytime I think about "looking into your soul" its pretty much sounds like me talking to myself in my brain. Logically I think its just total bull. I mean its like a step from believing.

No offense taken, Kid. Honest. :)

I'm sure that if I understood the word as you do that I would find it equally meaningless and pretentious.

" . . . live like a god among ordinary people." - Epicurus (340-270 BCE)

** a form of "spirituality" open to all anti-supernaturalists **

Consider finding out about the "real" Epicurus as way of starting to create your own view of things . . . a personal philosophy.

Epicurus' conclusions drawn from his atomism distilled into four statements (tetrapharmakos - 4-fold cure):

Don`t fear god,
Don`t worry about death;
What is good is easy to get, and
What is terrible is easy to endure.

Epicurus' own advice to a follower:

Think about these things . . . yourself, and with a companion like yourself, and you will never be disturbed while awake or asleep.

But you will live like a god among ordinary people. For those who live among immortal blessings are not like mortal beings.

It's interesting to find the word 'emotional' favored over 'spiritual'. In my experience, the word 'emotional' often suggests something at odds with the rational. In the end, it all comes down to language, doesn't it? Is it possible that atheists feeling comfortable with spirituality are simply more given to metaphor than their more literal counterparts? Why disparage them as pretentious or just "a step from believing"? I sincerely don't understand the disdain.

I'm glad there are real atheists like you guys to put those silly spiritual atheists, pantheists, etc. in their proper place. I mean, who do they think they are? Pretentious bastards!

I've never been able to get a handle on the words 'spiritual' and 'spirituality'. I think, as you guys say, that it's just a pretentious euphemism for 'emotion' or 'emotional'. Otherwise, it's gobbledegook.

I agree. Spiritualists are basically part time Christians. They have one foot in the door and one foot out. They are either too afraid to be atheists or they just have to believe in something to stay happy.
