I have seen the patent before and, unfortunately, I have a rebuttal argument.
Many products we use today are used differently than they were originally intended. Most have seen innovations that improved efficiency, appearance, or functionality. In other words, turning the roll around could be considered an innovation.
Apologies for keeping the argument rolling.
My advice would be to stop arguing with the roommate. It's pointless. My kids used to argue with me that nobody is going to tear off the paper and use those tiny little squares. Maybe it never dawned on them that the tiny squares are there so you can decide how much paper you need and then easily tear it off. Without the squares how do you know where to tear?
And so long as we're on the subject:
Which is just fine ... right up until the point where your cat discovers said roll of toilet paper and gets VERY fascinated with it!
