I would like to compile a list of quotes from overrated religious leaders that highlight their ignorance and hateful theologies, any help?

"Throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad...

"[T]he pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way — all of them who have tried to secularize America, I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'"

-- Rev. Jerry Falwell, on what he believed caused the 9/11 attacks

If that jackass wanted to point his finger at me and make such an accusation, I would grab it and bend it back until it broke ... then tell that specious idiot that it was a born-again president who couldn't be bothered to act on a National Intelligence Estimate report, whose title could not have been more blatant if it tried – "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in US" – than it was the actions of ordinary people dismissing a non-existent god.

Yes, Luther had a near uncontrollable hatred of the Jews for killing his Christ who also was a Jew. It makes perfect sense when you get into it. Without a murdered Jesus you have no salvation, and this way you can have alternate good and bad tears on Good Friday. You cry back and forth and just cannot make up your mind.

Then you have the resurrected Jesus who was totally unrecognizable to people and was preached that way to people into the 1800's. Even so, he had a perfectly glorified body and the holes in his hands will never heal up. Should I say "poor Jesus" or poor believers?

Reason is a whore, the greatest enemy that faith has; it never comes to the aid of spiritual things, but more frequently than not struggles against the divine Word, treating with contempt all that emanates from God.

--Martin Luther

I will admit that I did 30 years of that Lutheran, Missouri synod, thing.

Since leaving it, I will say that I think Luther, was a sadomasochistic who flogged himself for his imagined "sins" against his imaginary sky fairy and that he may have been right about the massive corruption in the Catholic church (he posted his 95 theses on the church door) but he was bonkers.

I also think the conservative / literalistic members of the Lutheran synods would tell him to get away from them because of the many problems he had with the Bible.

Ruth, did they mention Luther's near-uncontrolled hatred for the Jews?

Funny they never mentioned this in the two years I studied religion as a teenager in the Lutheran Church. Yuck!

I'm glad you mentioned Martin Luther. Many don't know it, but he used to pass gas at the devil. He would do this and say "here, devil. I blow you a little kiss."

With your quotes here of Martin Luther, we have no reason to believe him or any other person of faith as far as I'm concerned. Many want to claim that Edison and Darwin alike recanted and turned back to "faith" on their deathbeds. Not only is this a daydream of the church, it's also a bald face lie!

If you want hateful quotes from religious leaders, here's a clue: wait for them to open their mouths.  Whether it's Ratzinger or Bergoglio or Robertson or Hagee or Haggard, believe me, they will oblige you so fast you'll wonder at the speed of it.

Yes Loren, I had those quote bookmarked but I probably got them from you originally.  This time however, I don't want to focus on Martin Luther solely.  Any overrated religious hack will do.
