Everywhere I have seen people talk about atheism there are stories about how they deconverted. I find myself a little envious of these stories. Most of them talk about how liberating and freeing it was to take off the religous shakles. It actually sounds like a pretty good experience (at the end anyway).

I have never believed (as far back as I can remember) anyway. I remeber being in church making my communion in primary school. I knelt in prayer like everyone else and remember feeling quite embarrased that everyone was pretending to talk to an imaginary person.

If you, like me were never really converted in the first place, give a shout out. At the very least we can condesend a little to those who once believed (kidding!) :)

Are you in "Atheists Since Birth"? Then you won't feel left out. I just feel left out cause I'm one of the few who was never a Christian...but that's a good thing too, the same as being atheist since birth.

Don't think I ever believed in the Christain God. As a kid I was given a 'child' version of the bible and even then I was well read enough to realize it was just another story. And not a very interesting one.

We had weekly 'discussions' with priests at school, attended school run retreats, shown videos of abortions (one kid passed out), forced to attend weekly sunday mass ("You can decide for yourself at 18") and dragged to private pray retreats by my mother. So I got the full course of indoctrination, all of which left me mostly unfazed (but I still can't help mentally completing a prayer when I hear the first few lines.)

I've never been a believer. I can't relate to the deconversion stories at all, but I'm not envious in the least, just extremely perplexed.

Haha, I used to feel the same way about conversion stories when I was a christian...

Never believed... Doesn't make me superior to anyone. I'm more envious of those who have faith. Just seems so much easier to say God did it than have to learn anything. A partner in crime and justification for being an ultimate asshole. Undying imaginary love and delusional forgiveness for just being a human... Unless your gay, of course... or eat shrimp... Seems pretty simple, except the gay part. Id give up crustaceans for a chance at eternal bliss. Always been a martyr type tho.

I will NOT give up God's most delicious abomination, my crispy BBQ-d Golden Eagle... Its a family recipe. No, you cant have it...

I'm with you Gary, I was never a believer so I can't say how it feels to free oneself from the religious shackles - I never wore them.
