So, I'm new here, and I though I should introduce myself.

My name is Johan, and I live with my girlfriend Jasmine and my cat Pixel in the south of Sweden, which is a country in the north of Europe.
I don't come from a very religious background, altough my mother together with her relatives are christians. Religion really has had no place in our lives, other than at weddings and such things that we've attended.

However, just a couple of days ago I called my mother to ask what church I belonged to, since I moved (I'm not sure about the system we have in Sweden for such things), and when she asked me why I told her I wanted to unregister from the Swedish Church. She got very defensive, stating that if I left church I also didn't contribute to the restoration of old churches and such. This is true, however I honestly do not care.

I haven't yet unregistred, but I will in the not too distant future.

Anyway, since this is an introduction I think I should reveal some information about who I am and what I like to do.

I am very interested in computers, and computer programming, and it's because of this I now attend school in the nearby city of Malmö where I study exactly that, software development. I enjoy many different typed of music, although I often prefer the various electronic genres. For some time now music hasn't been the first priority when listening to something on my portable audio player. Why? Well, I discovered podcasts! Oh, what a great thing to be able to listen to intelligent conversation, like the ones in the 'Non Prophets' podcast, which I now am a big fan of.

My biggest concern about joining a community such as this, is the fact that all of the sudden I am surrounded by enlightened and intelligent people. This, I feel, puts some pressure on me. I am kind of new to the free thinking community, so if you have any tips on what to read, what to watch, or what to listen to I would really appreciate it.

Also, any corrections or comments stating I was out of line or just plain ignorant are welcome, as long as they are somewhat respectful.

Cheers from the cold land of Sweden.

Johan

Johan,
Welcome to the Nexus. We ofter hear that Northern Europe is the least religious part of the world. I'm sure many of us are interested in the reasons for that.

Thanks everyone for the nice words. What a pleasant welcome! Also, thanks to dam for recommending a book.
I'll probably transform this blog post into something a bit shorter to put on my profile page.

Welcome! This is a great community of thoughtful, thinking people. Have you ever read Religion and the Decline of Magic by Keith Thomas? Interesting read that gives a lot of insight into the mysticism and magical aspects of religion throughout history.

Brrrr...Sweden. Welcome to Atheist Nexus. :)

I like this community because I can be myself. I have come here to learn more about Atheism and religions. I am educating myself so I can raise awareness about both in the US.

The free thinking community is just that. You can explore all sorts of things about your non-beliefs. I just depends on what you want to do with it. There are a lot of great blogs, links, pictures, videos, and intelligent thoughts floating around here. If you aren't careful you might learn something. I am glad you can be a part of it. :)

Enjoy

Welcome to A/N.
Here, you should be free and feel free to learn so don't feel pressured. There isn't a need for it. Be aware that atheists come in all shapes and sizes, just like religious people.
You probably could have written your introduction in your profile. It would have made it easier for others, but you may have had your own reasons for doing it the way that you did.
