I'm looking for book recommendations on a few subjects:

1) philosophy (any)

1b) political philosophy: specifically capitalism, socialism

2) religion: including books about atheism, religions, cults, etc

2b) religious texts: any texts (already own Bible, Koran, Book of Mormon)

3) science (any)

4) must-read literature: esp. 19th and early 20th century literature

If you have a subject you think I should read up on, feel free to suggest it and/or specific titles to me as well.

After reading this I sat back and took a small inventory of books on my shelf. It's makes me laugh, it seems that it has been a long time scince I did an inventory of my books. I will shamefully avoid mentioning what I found. There is one book that still inspires me. I noticed you did not have and psychology up on your list, so I will suggest something a different. The book is called FLOW The psychology of optimal experience. by Mihaly Csíkszentmihályi

It's already getting to be a little old (published 2007), but Before the Dawn: Recovering the Lost History of Our Ancestors had a big impact on me. The Code Book was a lot of fun. 19th century literature: well, Jane Austen rules. But honestly, there are so many wonderful books; how can I narrow it down to just a dozen or so? (^_^)

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll check these out and see if I can get copies. If you think of any more, please share them.

If you have any interest in history, specifically pre-Columbian Americas, 1491 by Charles Mann is a must read.  It will change your preceptions of what the original cultures and nations were like before Europeans swarmed in.  It's an excellent read and is lavishly  documented.

I read a lot about science, particularly physics and related subjects. All but the first of the list below have to do with physics.....

Evolution For Everyone-David S. Wilson

The Cosmic Landscape-Leonard Susskind

Warped Passages-Lisa Randall

The Trouble With Physics-Lee Smolin

Brian Greene and Hawking also have good ones. I've read multiple by them.
