This one is for you, ladies. You know all those years you have struggled to become equal in the world. Voting, wages, and so on... well, you were going against God's word. So if you are Christian, and believe in the Bible, either get out of the church or become a slave to men. It's the will of God.
Women are dumped on throughout the Bible and are still being dumped on in the churches. How many denominations allow women to be clergy? If they are clergy, they still aren't equal to the men in the clergy. And it is supported 100% in the Bible.
It starts in the second account of creation. Women were only created because Adam could not find a suitable wife (help meet) in the animals that God showed him. On top of being second string to cattle and sheep, women were created from a spare rib of a man. Woman needed a man in order to exist.
When Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit of knowledge of Good and Evil... Who got the harshest of punishment? Eve! Adam's punishment was that his herbs would sprout thorns and he would get to rule over Eve, is that really a punishment? Then Eve got pain in childbirth, pain in conception... and became a servant of sorts to Adam. Not to mention the official punishment for Adam was for listening to his wife. (Genesis 3:16-17)
Even in the ten commandments, women are portrayed as being the property of their husband. In Exodus 20:17 it says "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor’s." Yes sir, the wife ranks right there with the ox and ass.
That's not all. Exodus 21:7-10 covers the rules of selling your daughter, her master making her marry him, and then her role if he wants more wives. I see the woman's view and feelings mattered quite a bit here.
Exodus 22:16-17 is a really good one. If a man sleeps with an unwed virgin, he must marry her. But if her father refuses to give her to the man, then the man must pay the "pay money according to the dowry of virgins"... is this crazy or what? I can see it now...
Man: Hi sir, I just shtooked your virgin daughter, and now must marry her.
Father: There is no way my little girl is marrying you, punk!
Man: Okay, well then here's the $5 I have to give you then.
It's not just women, female animals are not as good as male animals. It is male animals that are to be burned for offerings. (Leviticus 1:3, 1:10) When a king sins and needs to make a sacrifice he has to use a male goat, but when any old commoner sins, they have to use a female goat. (Leviticus 4:23, 4:28)
Now back to the abuse of human females. This biased view isn't limited to adult women. Little girls, even from the day that they are born, are inferior to little boys. All of Leviticus chapter 12 is based on the purification of a woman after she has given birth. Get this... after a woman has given birth to a boy, she will be unclean for 7 days and must purify herself for 33 days. If she gives birth to a girl, she is unclean for 14 days and needs 66 days of purification. Go figure.
Leviticus also touches on the treatment of female slaves and their male masters. According to Leviticus 19:20-22, if a man rapes his female slave... the woman gets punished and the man's sins are forgiven. Look for yourself, it's rather shameful.
Women are even worth less in terms of their monetary value. Here's a table of values as given by God in Leviticus 27:3-7. $ = Shekels of silver
Ages 1 month - 5 years: Male = $5; Female = $3
Ages 5 years - 20 years: Male = $20; Female = $10
Ages 20 years - 60 years: Male = $50; Female = $30
Ages 60 and up: Male = $15; Female = $10
In Deuteronomy 22:28-29 it says that if a man rapes a virgin, he must marry her and also pay her father 50 shekels for humbling her. How wild is that, do you think that would fly today?
1 Samuel 18:25-27 may just be one of the most disgusting things ever written. Saul sells his daughter to David. But he didn't want money, noooooo, that would be too normal... he wanted 100 foreskins from Philistine men. David gave him 200 foreskins. What the hell is with foreskins? Couldn't he get ears? Or how about fingers? This is disgusting. And women certainly be offended that one of their kind was traded for 200 bits of severed penises.
Women are below men in the pecking order again in 1 Corinthians 11:3-9 where it is made crystal clear that God over Christ, Christ is over man, and man is over woman. After all man was not created for woman, but woman was created for man.
Women are not allowed to talk in church, in fact the idea of them speaking in church is shameful. This is made very clear in 1 Corinthians 14:34-35. Women are to remain silent, and if they have any questions they are to ask their husbands at home after church.
Not only are women inferior to men, but they should treat their husbands as they treat God. Check this quote out from Ephesians 5:22-24 "wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the savior of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing."
1 Timothy chapter 2 is another chapter that is dedicated to saying women are below men, and also says women are to dress plainly. But let's take a harder look at where women stand in this chapter. It says that women are to learn in silence without subjection... they cannot teach nor "usurp authority over the man". It also makes it clear that Adam was first, then Eve. And the Garden of Eden thing, with the forbidden fruit... well that was 100% Eve's fault. Women are gullible, yet conniving.
It amazes me that there is a woman, who could read the teachings of the Holy Bible, and call herself a Christian. How many Christian men are using these teachings to justify abuse? It's sickening.
The status of women in history and modern times has been formed and influenced in whole, or in great part, from the religious beliefs of the times. It is not surprising, considering the almost total gender domination of church leadership by men, that this status is somewhere between property and personal slave, to those men. Also the gender domination of power in all levels of society has virtually assured that this status has remained firmly entrenched even in our "enlightened" modern society. With women possessing no power, this religious prejudice is carried into almost every aspect of most women's lives.
It may be by neither law, nor truth, that women are inferior by their nature but the evidence that they are denied equality in almost every level of society, and in every culture worldwide, is undeniable. Even a cursory study of the attitude Jesus had for the women in his life will reveal, not condescension or apathy, but respect, love, in equal measure to their male counterparts. Women are not inferior in the sight of God, but in the primitive, ignorant, and oppressive view of a male-dominated world.
"Most of these feminists are radical, frustrated lesbians, many of them, and man-haters, and failures in their relationships with men, and who have declared war on the male gender. The Biblical condemnation of feminism has to do with its radical philosophy and goals. That's the bottom line. Jerry Falwell
The Glaring Truth
Women in ancient Israel had a status, not unlike that of women in Afghanistan, during the grossly oppressive rule of the Taliban. An even sadder reality is that in many mainstream "Christian" denominations if you remove the "double veils in public" aspect, there is very little difference in the treatment of women.
Two bible verses in particular sum up the position of women:
"I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee."--Genesis 3:16
By this third chapter of Genesis, woman lost her rights, her standing--even her identity, and motherhood became a God-inflicted curse degrading her status in the world.
In the New Testament, the bible decrees:
"Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression."--1 Tim. 2:11-14
One bible verse alone, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" (Exodus 22:18) is responsible for the death of tens of thousands, if not millions, of women. Do women and those who care about them need further evidence of the great harm of Christianity, predicated as it has been on these and similar teachings about women?
The various Christian churches fought tooth and nail against the advancement of women, opposing everything from women's right to speak in public, to the use of anesthesia in childbirth (since the bible says women must suffer in childbirth) and woman's suffrage. Today the most organized and formidable opponent of women's social, economic and sexual rights remains organized religion. Religionists defeated the Equal Rights Amendment. Religious fanatics and bullies are currently engaged in an outright war of terrorism and harassment against women who have abortions and the medical staff which serves them. Those seeking to challenge inequities and advance the status of women today are fighting a massive coalition of fundamentalist Protestant and Catholic churches and religious groups mobilized to fight women's rights, gay rights, and secular government.
Why do women remain second-class citizens? Why is there a religion-fostered war against women's rights? Because the bible is a handbook for the subjugation of women. The bible establishes woman's inferior status, her "uncleanliness," her transgressions, and God-ordained master/servant relationship to man. Biblical women are possessions: fathers own them, sell them into bondage, even sacrifice them. The bible sanctions rape during wartime and in other contexts. Wives are subject to Mosaic-law sanctioned "bedchecks" as brides, and male jealousy fits and no-notice divorce as wives. The most typical biblical labels of women are "harlot" and "whore." They are described as having evil, even satanic powers of allurement. Contempt for women's bodies and reproductive capacity is a bedrock of the bible. The few role models offered are stereotyped, conventional and inadequate, with bible heroines admired for obedience and battle spirit. Jesus scorns his own mother, refusing to bless her, and issues dire warnings about the fate of pregnant and nursing women.
Why should women--and the men who honor women--respect and support religions which preach women's submission, which make women's subjugation a cornerstone of their theology?
The Bible is an instructional manual for the mistreatment of women; yet, a majority of female Christians seem able to read past the second-class citizenship, justify it or compartmentalize it as if it doesn’t exist. Staring with Genesis, the bible begins its degradation of women as she is created second. She is also condemned into marital bondage and a lifetime of pain as the bearer of children. If there is any doubt that women are worthless in the Bible, the approval of the rape of two female virgins over two male angels speaks volumes.
Exodus plainly states that women are property in the ten commandments as the tenth commandment makes it clear that a woman is to be considered the same as an “ass or slave.” Further into Exodus, virgins may be used as sex slaves while women that have “known” a man are to be slaughtered. Women can’t even enter the “tabernacle” they are required to support.
Probably one of the most troubling verses in the entire bible states that “thou shalt not suffer a witch to live,” a line that caused untold murder and suffering of women accused of witchcraft. In 2009, that single statement is still causing problems as Africans kill children accused of witchcraft. All of this goes against women before leaving the second book of the Bible.
Men escape any responsibility as the punishment for women is severe while the male escapes with a slap on the wrists, such as in the case a master has sex with an engaged woman. The woman is to be scourged. What about the man? Nothing.
Numbers doesn’t even count women in polls they are so lowly, that virgins are considered war booty. Then the Bible shifts in high gear in the next book. Deuteronomy is a virtual rape manual with such assorted atrocities as making a woman marry her rapist or allowing a man to divorce a woman for uncleaness, but not offering the same rule for a man. Following in Judges a woman is sacrificed to a rapist crowd to save a man. Even God can’t stay out of the carnage as in Isaiah he scourges and rapes.
If that isn’t enough to convince many women that the Bible wasn’t written for them and that it is a male construct, they are past the point of help. Throughout the bible the message to women is to submit to men.
The claim that Christianity had a hand in elevating the position of women in Western society is an oft repeated one. Like most of the claims we have seen, it is patently false. In this section we will take a look at what the Bible says about women. The Old Testament is a product of an ancient Semitic culture that never held women in any high esteem. In the Ten Commandments, for instance, women were listed among a man's possessions:
A woman is therefore, part of a man's property, like his house, ox and ass. Thus adultery in the eyes of the ancient Hebrew was the robbing of another man's sexual possessions. A married man does not commit adultery when he sleep with an unmarried woman. Wheres a married woman sleeping with an unmarried man commits the crime.
Daughters are at the disposal of their fathers; who alone has the right to offer them as sexual offerings to any man. This is clearly shown in the episode of Lot who was visited by two angels. The homosexual men of Sodom surrounded Lot's house and demanded that he hand over his two guests to them. Lot, instead of just chasing them away, actually offered the favours of his two daughters to the mob:
Obviously Lot considers rape a less serious crime than homosexuality. But what kind of man would let his virgin daughters be subject to such a treatment?
A similar story, even more abhorrent, is to be found in the book of Judges. A Levite man was travelling with his concubine through Benjamite territory. At evening time he was invited by an old man to spend the night in his house. That night, while they were "making their hearts merry", a mob of Benjamites demanded the old man hand the Levite over for homosexual purposes. The next part is best told by the Bible itself:
The Levite discovered his concubine, dead, in front of the house. He promptly cut her body into twelve pieces (Judges 19:29) and sent each piece to each tribe of Israel as a declaration of war against the Benjamites. The next chapter of Judges showed that God approved of the Levite's actions (who was the one who actually pushed his concubine out to the man and must be by any consideration an accessary to her murder) for he guided the Israelites through their battle with the Benjamites.
But it was the story of Adam and Eve, more than any other in the Old Testament, that was to be used repeatedly by the New Testament writers and the church fathers as proof of the woman's inferior status. This story, given in chapter three of Genesis, tells of how the serpent tempted Eve to partake of the forbidden fruit. Eve then persuaded Adam to do so. As a result both Adam and Eve were driven out of the garden of Eden.
The heritage of this Semitic culture, with its contempt for women was passed on to the early Christians, who considered the Old Testament as part of the divine revelation. Thus we find the story of Adam and Eve used in the pseudo-Pauline letter of Timothy to justify the inferior status of women:
Injunctions for women to maintain their inferior status are to be found everywhere in the Pauline epistles:
Coupled with the treatment of women as second class citizens is the New Testament's pathological hatred of sex. (It should be remembered that the New Testament writers were all, without exception, men.) This is clearly evident in the epistles of Paul. To him, marriage is not an expression of love between a man and a woman but functions merely as a safety valve for sinful lust:
The abhorrence and renunciation of sex is also present in the gospels. Jesus is represented in the gospel of Matthew as saying:
This sex-hatred and misogyny found its fullest expression in the myth of the virgin birth. Mary was to be the archetypal Christian woman, one completely submissive to God's will. Mary acquiescence to be made pregnant by the Holy Spirit could not have sounded any sweeter:
Mary conceived Jesus virginally and without lust. No other woman in history could ever claim that; they will always fall short of this unreachable ideal. This was to be another element in the Christian suppression of women.
It is from the Bible, of course, that the church fathers derived the misogynist teachings. When Christianity became a dominant force in the Roman Empire around the fourth century, the position of women deteriorated. This situation was not improved until the nineteenth century. Today this Christian misogyny continues to express itself in the Catholic church's opposition to abortion and birth control.
