I was going to give my co-worker a ride to her house, and when I turned my car on the song "Fade to Black" by Metallica was blasting! I was a bit embarrassed, I told her "sorry, that's my favorite song ever!" The statement caught me off guard for a second.... I never claimed a favorite song! According to my counter on iTunes, I've listened to it 4x more than my #2 song. Something about that song just does it for me!

I think it's the perfect ballad. And this was in a time, in 1984, when all the ballads where just so awful. They were mosty used for hair bands to sell records. I apologize for people that like those ballads, but those songs make me want to barf! Metallica showed them how it was done. Excellent musicianship, beautiful meaningful lyrics, and at the end they still rocked out and it ended with a great solo! They showed they can slow it down and write a great ballad without sacrificing the heavier elements, but at the same time not go 100% hardcore with it.

Sorry, I probably sound like a teenager blabbering on about a song. I just had the thought in my head and had to blog about it!

Metallica's first five albums were about as flawless of a group of songs as they can come. But I have my heart set on Fade to Black, I just love the guitar oriented songs they had.

To Ashish, I already bought tickets for Iron Maiden in Madison Square Garden in July 12! Up the Irons! My favorite Maiden song is Phantom of the Opera and Fear of the Dark.

I started a blog post for anyone who wants to stand up and announce they love hard rock etc! It'll be interesting to see how many do. I also think, for completeness' sake, maybe rock haters should also comment, with their preferences?

I love that song... that, and Vonnegut, got me through some very hard times when I was young.

I found this link to a live version, for those, like me, who haven't heard it.

I have to say, though, that my favourite Metallica ballad has to be "Nothing Else Matters"

Understandable. Fade to Black is likely my favorite Metallica song. There was a brief time I would have called it my favorite song I think. It speaks to me about the apparent irrationality and sometimes futility of the world that I felt at a young age. Despite that I always felt, ironically, uplifted by it.
