The opposite of the religious fanatic is not the fanatical atheist but the gentle cynic who cares not whether there is a god or not.

I like to think it's just common sense. It's not by not caring that we can possibly hope to change the world, certainly not for the better. Caring is but an obvious reaction to an awfully wrong state of things.

What is it that makes us so much more wrapped up in this stuff? I know people who aren't necessarily religious... they may be an apathetic atheist or an apathetic theist (not subscribing to any particular god)... but they legitimately just don't care (and I don't think that's where you want to be) -- this apathy spreads into scientific knowledge, also. So what is it that makes us care? Is it in our genes? Do we have the "I give a shit" gene expressed more deeply than others?

Sometimes I wish I could just NOT CARE! lol but my conscience doesn't allow it.

There can be genuine commitment without fanaticism. Live and let live is a soothing approach to things until you realise the rest of the world doesn't quite embrace it.
