Progressive Muslim Leader Speaks Up on Marriage Equality

“As somebody who’s living in a society that recognizes the separation between church and state, between mosque and state, sinagogue and state, or any other type of religious manifestation, I read a book by a lesbian lawyer from San Francisco arguing for gay marriage and I found her argument was absolutely solid in terms of secular principles. So I think if America is true to its secular principles, it would be very difficult to argue against that.”

Apparently, this is the face of "moderate" Islam. And, as we all know, moderates give cover to the extremists in any religion - Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, etc. I did notice one glaring thing. He talks about secular vs. religious traditions. He never once mentions HUMAN rights. So much for religious morality.

Allow me to be less than overly enthusiastic about this cleric's statement. The quote is certainly accurate, but if you listen to the entire interview, he makes a distinction between secular and religious tradition. And guess what? He comes down clearly on the side of the religious tradition, citing Thomas Aquinas as authority. Yeah, right!

Here's the statement.

... I don't expect to see a steady, persistent movement coming out of islam for marriage equality but this is refreshing

I'm surprised but people of all faiths and beliefs will come around in time.

Well, ye gods! An imam who cares about secular government. Someone catch me, I may faint!
