I asked my family this weekend why they as Christians feel it is OK to lie to their children about Santa Clause.  I explained that, to me, it seemed quite hypocritical that one of the Christian tenants is not to lie, but yet in celebration of the very beginning of Christianity Christians lie to their children about this man who brings toys. The answer I got was because it brings so much joy to the children.  So, is it one of those "ends justifies the means" types of things? 


I am a fairly new atheist.  I am curious as to the thoughts of the other atheists on this site as to dealing with this situation.  I have no children, so it's really a mute point for me, but I was just curious as to everyone's thoughts.

Well, children are basically property to a lot of parents. It takes the
rebellious stage in adolescence to disabuse them of this idea. So, to
them, you can no more lie to your kid than you could a piece of
