Hello, everyone! This is my first blog here, and I hope to put many more in the future. Meanwhile, this is the only Christmas card I shall be sending anyone!
“Courage, friend! Christmas comes but once a year and is soon over!” – George Bernard Shaw.
Yes, so, it’s THAT time of year again! Well, Christmas means nothing to me as a religious festival, but who other than Dickens' Ebenezer Scrooge could turn down the opportunity for a great party – with rich food, excellent drink, bright lights and laughter around a blazing log fire – at this freezing time of year, with snow on the ground and more expected?
For me, not Christmas but New Year – ‘Hogmanay’, as the Scots call it – is the true celebration: a time for inner and outer renewal of all that is positive in one’s life. Odd things can occur at this strange and beautiful time of year when the everyday slows to a crawl, and all normal conventions are briefly suspended; old friendships can be revived, new ones formed, and one begins to think seriously on what life-affirming events may await one in the year to come.
So, to all my fellow atheists, Humanists, Brights and generally naturalistic nontheists everywhere: ’tis the season to be jolly, so have a great and merry one! and I hope and trust we all have a happy and fulfilling new year!
See you next blog!
