@ Laura that's wild thanks...
Actually it seems the truth is that sharks may get less cancer than other species, but it's hard to study cancer in sharks - for obvious reasons!
Sharks have very different immune systems from us. A lot of our immune cells are produced in our bone marrow, but sharks don't have bones, they have cartilage. So their immune system works differently and it has a very quick response.
Actually sharks get cancer less often than other animals, which is very interesting.
The link is to a marine laboratory which is trying to find out the sharks' secret for avoiding cancer.
There are thousands of similar myths for the purpose of profit and power or control.
Science is gradually weeding them out in the well educated 5% of the population, the rest of the population will have to wait til public education improves and the media targets such scams.
The media is likely the quickest form of attack on such myth mongers.
Though in developed countries where they believe tiger penis and rhino horn can bring sexual vigor and good health where eating ordinary offal and chewing fingernails can do the equivalent harm/good to the individual, but less harm to the environment, still have a long way to go before the market of such products ceases.
Interesting reading. I imagine most types of animal could get cancer. Maybe not sponges and worms, but most. Even plants can get tumors, but those are not usually fatal.
