I recently discovered this site and was prompted to make a post here. Mostly because I have come to despise (yes despise) many religionists. I use that term to include any and all who feel a god given urge to promote the need to believe in their particular brand of god, and aggressive push the set of rules they consider to come with that belief.

I know many believers who are secure in their faith and do not feel this need, but I am active on one of the many forums on the internet and often find myself attacked verbally because I insist on making fun of people who believe in a magical, invisible super-being. And I find that the most aggressive attacks come from people who appear to have the most tenuous belief system.

These tend to be the literal creationists, who think the world was created by a super being a few thousand years ago. I also discovered, much to my horror, that these people are legally allowed to remove their children from the public school system in the USA to be able to teach this to their children. Personally, I think this equates to child abuse and have come to the conclusion that the only course of action open to me is to make fun of creationists.

A part of me feels sorry for them. I mean, it must be a living hell to have your core belief system challenged every time you open a science book or turn on the television. "Where did the dinosaurs go Daddy?" must be a question more dreaded than "where do children come from?"

Only a very small part though :)

I used to know a guy like that.  His parent homeschooled him until college and taught him ALLLL about creationism.  Poor guy.

@unholyroller - I agree, although the issue with religions and the fundamentalists in particular is that it teaches you NOT to think for yourself. :(

@Anil - No argument :)

Let the fundies jerk their kids out of public schpool. Then maybe the rest of our kids and grandkids can get a decent, scientific education. When those home-schooled kids grow uop and find out just how woefully uneducated they are, maybe they'll be so pissed off at their dumb-ass parents they'll leave the superstition behind, learn to read and get some real book learnin. Just my humble and subjective opinion.

I agree. I don't think the government should force you not to home school, but when there are people like this - it begs the question as to what is acceptable to teach your kids. Sure, "I believe "XYX" but to teach it as proven scientific facts? Child abuse. Pure and simple.

Nice post. I support the right of parents to home-school, but I wish there was a way to prevent it from being abused to brainwash innocent children. To eradicate such religious child abuse, religion needs to be completely overthrown and placed in the "mythology" section where it belongs. The world needs a new Age of Enlightenment. When all idiotic, irrational, and fallacious faiths are gone, the world will be so much better off.

True. It is a very, very feeble excuse. There is no science in creationism. None. It must be horrible believing this stuff and every scrap of evidence proves what you believe is garbage. No wonder thay are so angry :)

What bugs me is that religion is always given the "Cop-Out" card. Let's say for instance someone wanted evidence of creationism. They use a play on words to get out of it, or a play on words to make their point, or plain psuedo-science.

If they did that with Evolution, everybody would laugh their ass off and dismiss the crap out of it.

Well, you could argue that all religion is a lie. :) That is a good quote though. I think my current favorite is:

"Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities."
