The Atheist Pig's Take on Mass Shootings

Is this the new normal?  Over 500 mass shootings in the past year, more in the past decade possibly than in all the 20th century.  The trend gives no appearance of abating, indeed, quite the opposite.  Frequently, gun sales surge in the wake of the more publicly reported shootings, owing to the mistaken impression by the gun lovers of the US that maybe, just maybe, THIS TIME the government will clamp down ... and yet they don't.  The push to regulate the bump stocks which were used in the Las Vegas slaughter (I really can't call it anything else) has stalled in Congress with no sign of further progress.  Names like Columbine and Aurora and Pulse are being added to the roster, sometimes on a daily basis.  Meanwhile in the rest of the world, such incidents are all but unheard of.

It's gotten to the point where our buddy Winston, The Atheist Pig, has had his fill of the whole business.  Unlike too many others, he has a clear vision of current events and actually understands why nothing is being done about them.  No, he's not indifferent, just disgusted, or so I suspect, and the ongoing banal tattoo about "thoughts and prayers" only emphasizes the stupidity of the whole situation in his eyes ... and mine, too, for that matter.

Winston recently had an exchange with a coworker about it, and he sums up the whole mess in four panels far better than I've heard in some news broadcasts.  I offer it here for your edification.

They're not just in it, Michael. They're driving it. They're driving the agenda, and what's even scarier is that Trump is taking their lead. Of course, he has to take their lead because he has no original thoughts of his own.

Dominionist christians are in this bunch that is in power right now. Mike Pence is one and there are others too. These days I find them disgusting in every way.

Chicken manure, Guano , cordite, and gunpowder may be tools for people undble to use diplomacy.

Congress seems to promote violence.  It seems no wonder that the U.S.A. is violent.

What is it with with  White men and mass murder? Why do people vote for characters in congress  who don't represent their views?

Why do women vote the way they do?

I worked with a dominionist christian  who's wife was  dropping children as often as she could.

(Dark Sarcasm).

He controlled her, his children and the family.

He said to me that he was an Alpha Male - im,licit was he controlled  everyone else.  I thought he would go into the voting booth to make sure his wife voted according to his direction.

Dominionist christians are an interesting and disgusting group.  You may be able to thank them and other evangelicals  for the election of Donald Trump.

I appreciate your reminding us about that, Chris, and once again, I have to wonder.  Would it take a far more serious incident, one which would leave dead congresspeople in its wake before some of these popgun partisans would be willing to wake up and smell the cordite?

Remember that members of congress were shot at a  Dem's v. Rep's baseball game.

That's the whole thing in a nutshell. Congress wants the money from the NRA. The NRA continues to pay Congress so they can do any fucking thing they want and the citizens suffer the consequences. The NRA owns the government. Disgusting.

Oh, I have no doubt but that when the gun fetishists see yet another assault against their favorite toy that they will panic and run to their comfort zones for more reinforcement, or at least those who have been the most infantilized by their obsession.  All that means is that we have to up the pressure on those who pass the laws that much higher, and let Wayne LaPierre and his cronies know that we won't quit.

This won't be an easy fight, any more than it will be a quick one.  The NRA is so entrenched in the halls of Congress that they doubtless have assumed their own brand of privilege, even as Christians have.  It is past time that assumption was disabused.

Loren, a nickel says that when the talk about a March Against Guns begins, gun sales will increase. Just like gun sales increase when the talk agout banning guns increases.

To cause the effect, effect the cause.

Kathy, as much as I think the victims get short shrift in this whole magilla, what gets even less attention is that The Status Quo Is KILLING PEOPLE and NOTHING Is Being Done About It! By doing nothing, we allow mass shootings to become the new normal, and I find that utterly unacceptable and intolerable.

As we've had marches for women and science and immigrants, I'm beginning to think that we now need a march on a similar scale ... AGAINST GUNS.

Hm-mm, about seven and a quarter billion humans on the earth and growing.

The news a few weeks ago told of births in Japan and unnamed other Asian nations being insufficient to replace their present populations.

Our species elsewhere refuses to see earth’s increasing population as a problem.

Our mass murderers may be performing the function once served by canaries in coal mines: warning of impending danger.

I’m sometimes a fatalist. And yeah, I’m 86 and had no children.
