drama, the Department of Homeland Security had airport officials call Emirates flight 202, headed for Dubai, back to the gate as it was cruising for takeoff at New York’s Kennedy airport around midnight this morning. As passengers deplaned, 30 yr old Faisal Shahzad was arrested and taken into custody.
A naturalized American citizen born in Pakistan, Shahzad recently returned from spending five months in Karachi, and is believed to have traveled to Peshawar during his extended visit, which is a hotbed of militants near the western border of Afghanistan. Interestingly, the Pakistani Taliban group claimed responsibility for the attempted murders
shortly after the news hit.
The Pakistani Taliban is one of Pakistan's largest and deadliest militant groups. It has strong links to al-Qaida and is based in the northwest close to the Afghan border. The group has carried out scores of bloody attacks inside Pakistan in recent years, mostly against Pakistani targets, but it has made no secret of its hatred toward the United States.
There is, however, no evidence yet of this or any other group's complicity in this bombing attempt.
