I'm really sick of hearing people equate acceptance of evolution with atheism. It annoys me greatly when people insist this is an atheist country (I know, WTF?) because evolution is taught about in public schools.

So I created a page on Squidoo called "What Evolution Isn't" which attempts to explain that evolution is science, not a religion, not a belief system nor is it an evil plot to destroy religion.

What Evolution Isn't - Check it out!

I would pay real money to see that fish/squirrel and monkey act.
Actually I think the offspring of the union became preachers.

Most of the people I encounter that claim Christians are outnumbered rapidly follow it up with the persecuted Christian card. Hard to scream persecution at the top of your lungs when you're half the population.
I've also seen a lot of Christians that estimate the percentage of Christians to be about what the actual percentage of atheists seems to be. The reasoning behind it of course being "The rest just claim to be Christians. We're the real Christians."

Typically the claim works in the other direction. "This is a Christian country and the evil secularzzzz are trying to force our kids to believe they came from a monkey having buttsecks with a retarded fish-squirrel!"

But then I'm from the deep south and our religious people are a little crazier than y'all's.

Thank you. The person who last told me this was an atheist country or that atheists were a majority was from California. I LOL'd then I explained that liberal does not equal atheist nor does acceptance of evolution equal atheism. You can see the most recent comment implying that Christians are a minority (and that atheists aren't) here by someone with the screen name un_criado_fiel.

I'd never heard this was an atheist country (USA I presume?) Lol, that's hysterical. There's about 160 mosques and a couple thousand churches in my area, but only one Free Thinkers group, and it floats across three cities and doesn't have a building of its own.

Very nice article, BTW. I especially like the clear-up on "social darwinism"
