What is your opinion about Atheist Churches? Erm...

What a bizarre question. I think we call 'em 'pubs' 'round these parts.

I think people should do whatever they want.

But my atheism is what I'm not. My church is Subgenius.

I do the meetup.com thing too. That's about as close to church as I get.

www.meetup.com is good for atheist meetups and such. I have met over 12 atheists from that site :). I don't like 'church' next to atheist, but I wouldn't mind having a building all to ourselves :D

I keep forgetting how comparatively easy we have it in Britain.

I attend events by this lot occasionally: http://skeptic.org.uk/events/skeptics-in-the-pub. Not as often as I should though.

Looks like I need to go to London! Closest thing we've got here is The Three Lions Pub in Redmond (Washington State) and that's a way out of the way to meet up with friends and talk Atheism, though a really nice place... not like the seedy bars you see most places around.

The use of the word 'church' in the poll question brought to mind a bunch of atheists meeting once a week in a hall somewhere to discuss atheism. This sort of thing already happens in pubs (well, it does in London, and hopefully many other places.) I didn't think of it the way you describe, which sounds like it would be pretty splendid.

I don't know that it is that bizarre to consider. A friend and I laughed though when talking about it as we both said "Natural History Museum?" at the same time. One idea I have often thought about would be a free to enter and dwell place where one could get guidance on their questions that faith hasn't and can't answer. Monthly or weekly, prominent speakers could be invited to come and speak on scientific, political, social issues as they relate to Atheists. Science books, videos, and other information would be kept on hand and up to date for anybody to browse while there. (Yes, it sounds like a Library now too, but I would like to see something focused.)

...and I think stained glass windows are cool so I would love to have a house of "worship" devoted to science, logic, and reason with images of great thinkers, math and logic proofs, etc with the sunlight shining through to open up and inspire people who enter just like impressive looking churches. Only in this case the images presented would be far more impressive because they would be based on fact and not fiction.
