Wikipedia Bans Church of Scientology

"Showing a new-found resolve to crack down on self-serving edits, Wikipedia has banned contributions from all IPs addresses owned or operated by the Church of Scientology. According to Wikipedia administrators, this marks the first time such a high-profile organization has been banished for allegedly pushing its own agenda on the 'free encyclopedia anyone can edit.'"

Government initiatives to eradicate cults and religion are always a bad idea. I can't think of a single positive example. The best way to combat them is through better education. If people spread common logic to explain why these belief systems are flawed then fewer people will join them. By legislating against them or cracking down on them, all you'll do is drive moderate people deeper into their faith.

Oh I agree...I wonder if Scientology will survive the next 59 years.
If our government had two braon cells to rub together, they would try them, close them down and take their assets...

Interesting. A positive development. I think most of us realize that banning Scientology IP addresses from accessing the editing feature of their Wiki entry won't stop the cult from editing it from other IP's but it's the gesture by the Wiki administrators that will have an impact and, hopefully, activate more of the public to put Scientology on trail everywhere.
