I am often quite literally surrounded by people who seem to exist in an entirely different universe than myself. They don't think about anything the same way I do. All their opinions are rooted in xtian dogma or fox news, or both. They spend most of their time encouraging and propping each other's bullshit up. Or bashing on all the various groups that they hate (but they don't hate anybody, right?). Sometimes I wonder if I will ever need a procedure to surgically un-roll my eyes. Most of the time I can barely stand it.

So I come here. A few years ago I discovered this site and read it for weeks before joining. I was thrilled that there are actually people who feel like I do about stuff. It is therapeutic for me actually. Helps keep me from losing it. It gets lonely sometimes to have nobody in the real world with similar thought processes.

So I just want to say thanks to everyone for being intelligent rational thinkers and sharing! It always makes me feel better.

Thanks to the lasting effects of an age of British colonialism, English is a world language. I'm one of the fortunate millions to have grown up speaking it (with a relatively easy grammar, but a vocabulary appropriated from just about everyone else, and spellings that made more sense in Middle English but became standardized and fossilized during great shifts in pronunciation)

... and to be able to make worthwhile contact with many people I'd probably never meet face-to-face!

Agreed about the irrationality of "'natural' is always good" (as in anthrax, poison ivy, and botulism). Though a lot of synthetic and manufactured stuff is "just good enough for us to sell at a profit", never mind health or safety.

Roland thank you for being here! That's what Nexus is all about.

@Luara:  I understand.  I've encountered those types, too.  No matter how much you explain the process of vaccine development, the FDA, the vaccine ingredients ad nauseum, these fun people still insist it is a conspiracy between big pharma, big medical, and big government.  That is one huge bribery circle.

I like to point out to the naturopath crowd, that anthrax, nightshade, arsenic, and radiation are "natural" and "found in nature."  It never goes well.

I don't live in the bible belt.  But I still feel like I'm surrounded by an ocean of irrationality, the naturopath-promoting anti-vaccination sort mostly.  The people on A/N tend to think more.

I agree with you, roland707. Let me explain something though. People all say you have to respect the other person's religion. It's not nice to make fun of someone's religion. This just is not so!

Take a standup routine by Patton Oswalt where he starts out saying the above. Then he tells you the truth is that you have to acknowledge the religion of the other person. That's what it's all about. You just acknowledge their religion. Then you can look at them and say "that's what you believe. Man, that's the craziest shit I've ever heard in my entire life!"

Dougibert, I, too live in the Bible belt..East TN. Man, everyone I know is a fundamentalist Christian, mostly Baptist.

There's a public radio station in Panama City whose mantra is "music for the rest of us". Like you, that's how I feel about A.N.--a site for the rest of us. While I don't add my two cents worth to posts about "god bashing", anti-Christianity, or philosophical opinions, I respect the views of others. This is a great place to vent and share--or just sit back and read.

roland, if I don't miss my guess, THAT is what this place is supposed to be about: a space for US, where we can be who we are and enjoy the company of those of a similar mindset.

Take 'em easy, bro!

Roland, I live in the southernmost tip of Illinois. Notwithstanding Illinois, there are times when it's not much better here, than where you live. I've noticed that most good adherents to christianity also have a deep streak of racism - at least where I live. I commented on another post here about stupidity. To paraphrase, not all christians here in America are intolerant bigots, but all intolerant bigot here in American are more likely than not to be christian.

I, too, am glad to have this site as an outlet. And, thank you and the others on here for help keeping me sane in world of mental delusion.

I agree.  It is nice to have a website where we can debate and discuss various topics involving thinking, religion (which falls under "not thinking") without a few people jumping in with, "ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR!"  "YOU WILL BURN IN HELL, YOU STUPID ATHEISTS! DIE ALREADY!"  I cleaned up the grammar, spelling, and punctuation, but these are some of my favorites from the comments on the Friendly Atheist on YouTube.  Who can be offended by the Friendly Atheist?  The man is intelligent, polite, and politically correct.

I understand the eye rolling.  I feel as if I can see my thought process when I roll my eyes at some of the idiocy spewed by these xtians in my neck of the Bible Belt.
