Only trouble with posting there is that it is moderated and posts only become visible between 10 and 5:30 on weekdays, occasionally somebody will put them up late on Sunday.
So I have to wait for hours, the next day or after the weekend to get my posts published, depending on when I post them. Sometimes if I post them between 10 & 11am on weekdays, they might get published within the hour.
They used to have the forum unmoderated, but the insults would fly so strongly and the theists (weaklings) continually complained and now it stays moderated.
Well Yes, Leveni, Compass is still alive (just), they've put it on earlier, likely to attract new viewers. I've been trolling the forum for a couple of years now. When I first started it was full of Creationists and theists attacking a few atheists. Now it has almost become my personal blog. Practically killed off all Creationists and only a few theists remain and one agnostic (Suri). U r welcome to add any comment or criticism of my posts or cheeky style. I'm all up for improvement. Maybe you could start your own thread/blog there as well. I believe that even though it is a lowly program forum, it does get the occasional new viewer, so I am assisting in the education of those newcomers along with the brilliant Yamin, Maudib and a few other atheists.
Compass!!, Is it still going? I saw a few episodes in the late 80's. I remember I quiet liked it, even though it had a religious aspect to it, it was pretty tame.
The difference in how creationists think and how people with analytical minds think, creates a problem when the two communicate with each other. Creationists already know the whole answer. Those with analytical minds look at each point and try to prove or disprove each point. There is no common ground in the two mind sets.
Also the creationists understanding of the word 'believe' in regards to creationism and the meaning of the word 'believe' in "I believe evolution to be true" are quiet different. One of the 'believes' is based on facts the other on fiction. So I think it's impossible to have a real debate between the two. But it would be fun to do so.
Yes, so true Leveni, I'm striking this issue all the time on such sites as: http://www2b.abc.net.au/tmb/Client/TopicList.aspx?b=87&dm=1
Where I constantly argue with theists and sometimes Creationists as goiday_myd. I'm continually having to correct theist's views of atheism, where some atheists with Hitler and Stalin, though neither of them were truly atheists.
Same with the Creationists where they try to pretend that Evolution is an atheist plot against God instigated by Charles Darwin and atheist cohorts. They keep forgetting that Charles Darwin was a Christian who ventured into agnosticism, but, not an atheist. They cannot understand how other Christians can resolve Evolution and their Christianity. As in my arguments on: http://www.debate.org/ as Sagey, I haven't debated yet, though I've been making lots of comments and hounding a creationist who named himself FritzStammberger on such arguments as: http://www.debate.org/debates/There-is-proof-of-evolution-no-proof-... Just doing a bit of trolling there for the hell of it. LOL
It's an interesting problem for atheism as a movement. Because as soon as you form an organized group that has a social structure, a set of rules and regulations, it is going to be seen as conducive to a church organization. Not because it has anything to do with religion, but because people will always associate organized atheism with organized religion. Eg: Meet-up.Wikipedia.
I also became guilty of thinking one atheist organization acts in the same way as a religious organization, when I read the AFA's definition of Atheism. My reason for this is, is they are redefining/reinterpreting the meaning of atheism to meet their own personal views on the subject. Much the same way the religious redefine/reinterpret their own religions to meet their own personal opinions.
Another problem I see that makes atheism easily confused with religion, is the number of Atheist organizations that exist. Different 'denominations' of atheism. Eg:BRIGHTS, Out Campaign, Sea of Faith. Plus all the internet forums could be classified as denominational.
Another problem is the meaning of the word atheism. It is constantly being redefined.
1. (1604) atheist, (g) (* synonyms *) without, God, or beleeuing.
2. (1768) Atheist: denying God, one that denies God
3. (1856) ATHEIST. One who denies the existence of God.
4. (1970's) The AFA (Atheist Foundation of Australia). 'Atheism is the acceptance that there is no credible scientific or factually reliable evidence for the existence of a god, gods or the supernatural.'
5. (1994) ATHEISM: originally used in Greece of all those who, whether they believed in a GOD or not, disbelieved in the official GODS of the State:(This one is quiet miss-guiding).
Redefining what atheism is, is akin to religious people redefining what God or Jesus is.
My take on it is along the lines of Post-theism. Hopefully both theism and atheism will disappear.
More Info for those interested: http://deewr.gov.au/national-school-chaplaincy-and-student-welfare-...
Here,(Australia) public school chaplains, mostly belong to an evangelical Christian body whose agenda is clearly to proselytise children. Though they are removed if caught proselytising on school time, they use other techniques such as recommending and organizing out of school activities to proselytise. We are currently trying to remove these chaplains from public schools.
As their activities and presence on school grounds in anti-constitutional.
All theistic institutions indoctrinate or proselytise newcomers, students and children.
Atheist/Secular institutions do not proselytise at all. Indoctrination and Proselytising minors should be considered and condemned as child abuse!
Tanx M8z! Just popped into head from nowhere: (Goes to mirror, checks head for signs of alien surgery scars, finds a couple of lice, considers the possibility of idea originated by lice)
I'm with you mate.
