Yes, I follow where you're going, but section 3 of Article VI still stands, and is only capable of doing what it is designed to do as long as we care to enforce it. It seems these days there are a vast majority of folks that don't exactly care to, if they know it even exists. We are a secular country in principle, but we just happen to have a lot of Christians (by actual faith or agnostics riding on the wagon) living in it.

Unfortunately Article VI, section 3, “ religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States." is largely if not completely ignored. I love Christopher Hitchens but I disagree with him that the U.S. is a secular country. It should be but it isn't. Granted there are many countries where religion is entwined to an even greater degree than the U.S.
The fact that someone like Sarah Palin who's church seeks to cast out witches, speaks in tongues, and thinks religious creationism should be taught in science class, is even on the ticket depresses me greatly.
