QUICKIE: Would Christians Kill You If They Could?

Most Christians are good people (as most *people* are good people). But some Christians would almost certainly kill atheists and other "heathens" if they could legally do so. Under a theocratic law as such, would the "good" ones bear any responsibility?

The second blog I wrote on A|N back in November of 2009 spoke about how people who THINK they're free react to people who truly ARE, based in the example set by the movie, Easy Rider.  Granted, the movie is fiction, but there are many long-hairs who lived in the South back in the 60s who could testify to how they were treated by their more conventional (and parochial) fellow residents.  I posited in that blog the parallel I saw between the events of Easy Rider and the potential for similar events happening between extreme believers and atheists.  From where I sit, what the gentleman in the video above is talking about is no different from the basic concept of my blog.

I think the possibility of such a purge happening is also a function of the current decline in religious popularity and efficacy.  It was recently reported that the protestant population of the US has dropped below 50% for the first time since ... EVER, while the "nones" - people who espouse no particular religious affiliation - are the fastest growing segment.  While I don't think that this is an ironclad certainty, there is a possibility, maybe even a probability, that some of the more fundamentalist christian leaders will see in this trend the end of their business, will rebel against it, and urge their followers to join them.

Now I have no desire to be an alarmist or pull a Chicken Little here, but I think it would be foolish and irresponsible NOT to acknowledge that possibility.  Just as I said in closing that blog entry:

Forewarned is forearmed.
