Come on in, pull up a chair!

Picture yourself spending some time with congenial friends, sharing your lives and pictures from your cell phones." They're curious about that cool game, song, movie, camping trip, art show, or other event that fascinated you. You talk about all kinds of stuff, poetry, styles, personal achievements, relationships, and bad days. You can share your inner child, and laugh together. They sympathetically listen to your feelings about serious topics like politics or climate change, even when they don't agree.

Personal validation comes from paying attention to one another, giving more than you get. Everyone respects you and themselves, despite our amazing range of personal tastes and interests. They'll tell you they don't agree with an idea or behavior without implying you're a bad person or somehow deficient. It's an "I'm OK, You're OK" kind of fellowship, where nobody tries to make himself look better by picking on somebody else.

Nobody here is into mind games. A discussion started with a loaded guilt-throwing question will be deleted.

This group is not intended to compete with other groups on topics they cover but to "fill in the cracks." Whenever a discussion dwells at length on a topic for which there's an existing group, we urge you to provide members a link to that group to continue along their tangent.

A comment is a shout-out, which will get lost in a few days, because the comment wall is just a random stack.

Please start a discussion to share stories, photos, and videos. Replies will pop up in your "latest activity" and a conversation can develop from the feelings and thoughts you contributed. Groups are built on discussions.

The following is one of TheraminTrees' most thorough-going pieces, wherein he looks at the process and techniques whereby a "religious" organization (which will sound VERY familiar to most of us, once introductions are made!) takes a person who…Continue

Evangelicals Breaking Up with Jesus (Betty Bowers)

Started by Loren Miller. Last reply by Grinning Cat May 28. 10 Replies

Has evangelical Christianity lost sight of Christ?  Seems to me that there are a whole lot of evangelical Christians who are presuming to represent Jesus by not representing him or misrepresenting him or – let's be honest here – talking out of their…Continue

Early days yet (7-8 weeks) but grandchild number two is on its way. Due at the end of May next year. I'm very happy.

I'm "granddad, granddaddy, or papa" to my 6 grandchildren. I'm fine with all 3. Glad you had a good weekend, Ian.

Dardad sounds fine to me.

A worthy comparison.

Just returned from a family visit. All are well. Grandson James is getting a vocabulary his parents understand - and can interpret for the rest of us. He's beginning to understand that I'm 'dardad' (granddad). Some patio paving was laid so I got muck under my fingernails. There was also time to watch England trounce Australia in the quarter finals of the rugby plus a lot of Shaun the Sheep and Peppa Pig. We visited an organic farm and cafe yesterday where James was in heaven because he could sit on a tractor. A thoroughly good weekend

...apostasy... [etymologically derived from] "runaway slave"...

It's notable that the Bible has no concept of free, thriving democracies. The ideal societies were under a benevolent absolute monarch, earthly or heavenly.

Obedience was presented as the highest virtue, as made especially clear by the story of Abraham being willing to ritually murder his son because GodSaidSo. (There's a parallel story in the Qur'an.)

I heard the “...burn in hell” threat in the Catholic schools my dad sent his five kids to. A few kids objected to nuns’ threats that even turning down an invite to become a Catholic would send someone there. Going to a non-Catholic Sunday service would do it, as would apostasy (being a “runaway slave” in the OED).

The Roman church is losing its moral authority and its influence in the wake of the scandals. An previously Holy Catlick Ireland voted for marriage equality in a referendum in 2015 with almost two thirds of voters in favour. The sexual abuse of minors and the bones of dead infants had a profound effect.

I've seen one or two cars here with those types of signs in very large font. I find it so revolting to mess up a nice car like that.

I find Italy a bit surprising, Ian. I know religion is not that big a deal here, but its such a difference from the US, but of course the US south accounts for much of that.
