The Word ‘Truth’
Has the word ‘truth’ been fully and completely co-opted? In my view the answer is yes. Words such as accuracy and correctness must be used now to convey something the word truth used to still convey as recently as 30 years ago.
It seems the word truth was being corrupted and co-opted generations earlier however. Superman fought “for truth, justice, and the American way” as though a non-earth-born life form would, upon arrival here, choose to lump two ancient conceptual virtues together with a national ethos.
Who would be arrogant-slash-ignorant enough to go along with this blatantly and woefully naïve nationalism? A lot of people actually.
I couldn’t believe it. I still have trouble believing it.
At the present time, words such as truth (or justice) seem to have been withered into husk-like symbols of allegiance to whatever concepts (such as a national ethos) are subsuming them.
Is there a way to reverse it? I don't know. But I think the answer is no. I suspect that until the word falls entirely into disuse for at least a generation (or more), it will lack any ability to be resurrected in scholarly literature to its former concrete meaning.
